Narrative
Family lore has it that Lillie Mae was so mad at someone that she chopped up the cherry furniture. The cabinet maker, Peter Hancock, came with the Hancocks to Indiana from Wilson County, Tennessee circa 1818; so perhaps Lillie Mae was furious at her mother-in-law, Mary Jane Hancock Roberts, rather than Sam's father, Richard. This seems more likely, because Lillie Mae and Sam named their youngest child after Richard Roberts. Who knows...
-----
Lillie Mae was a county graduate. Her daughters were all high school graduates and studied in the I.S.U. and State Normal, and all were teachers in the public schools.
