Elfthryth was born in 0868 in Wessex, England.1 Elfthryth's father was Alfred the Great King of England and her mother was Ealhswith of the Gaini. Her paternal grandparents were Aethelwulf King of Wessex and Osburga of the Isle of Wright; her maternal grandparents were AEthelred Mucil Ealdorman of Mercia and Eadburga of Mercia. She had a brother and a sister, named Edward the Elder and Ethelflaed. She was the oldest of the three children.1 General Notes

AELFTHRYTH Princess of England was born about 868 in Wessex, England. She died in 920. OR: ELFRIDA. In Giles' trans of William of Malmesbury's
*Chronicles*, she is given as ETHELSWITHA: "He [Alfred] gave his daughter
Ethelswitha in marriage to Baldwin earl of Flanders, by whom he had Arnulf
and Ethelwulf."
