Douglas was born in 1902. Douglas' father was Robert Beggs and his mother was Minnie Hyndman. His paternal grandparents were James Beggs and Fanny Blow. He had four sisters named Helena M, Jennet, Lois and Freda. He was the second oldest of the five children.-
