Her paternal grandparents were Albertus Daniel Johannes van Blerk and Johanna Barendina Richards (van Blerk); her maternal grandparents were Francis Percival Breen and Chrissie Johanna Potgieter/ (Breen). She had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas Bernardus, Wilhelmina and Eleanor. She had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Thomas Bernardus, Jean, Edna and Margaret.-
