Jean was born on June 21st, 1905. Jean's father was Thomas Bernardus van Blerk and her mother was Kittie Friend (van Blerk). Her paternal grandparents were Albertus Daniel Johannes van Blerk and Johanna Barendina Richards (van Blerk). She had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas Bernardus, Edna and Margaret. Jean and Edna were twins. She had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Thomas Bernardus, Anna, Wilhelmina and Eleanor.-
