Mary was born on December 28th, 1826 in Lancaster, Worcester County, Massachusetts.1   Mary's father was William H. Newman and her mother was Mary Nichols. She had two brothers and two sisters, named James, William, Maria and Lucy.  She was the second oldest of the five children.
