James was born on August 31st, 1833 in Lancaster, Worcester County, Massachusetts.1   James' father was William H. Newman and his mother was Mary Nichols. He had a brother and three sisters, named William, Maria, Mary and Lucy.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
