  • John appeared in Salisbury in 1738 to administer the estate of his father. From that time he disappears absolutely, his wife or wives never found. Only in 1923 were family records found which prove him. When Benjamin Dow reached Epping in 1748, he found already there a substantial citizen and family, named John Dow. The very John Dow that these notes describe. Epping records are very fragmentary, in spite of a transcript made by Governor Plumer and preserved in the New Hampshire Historical Society at Concord. Beniah Dow was of Epping, but his children are all proved, so he makes no confusion. From 1748 the families of John and Benjamin lived in close harmony, both intermarrying with the Gilman family, founders of Gilmanton. John Dow was an early share owner of Gilmanton, was a comparatively well to do, and lived long.
