Alexander was born in 1784 in Wallasey, Cheshire, England.  Alexander's father was Thomas Rogers and his mother was Alice Cathron.  His paternal grandparents were John Rogers and Sarah A. He had a brother and two sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Thomas, Mary, Sarah and James.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
