József's father was József Körtvélyesi and his mother was Anna Vincze.  His paternal grandparents were Bálint Körtvélyesi and Anna Halász. He had three brothers and two sisters, named József, József, János, Katalin and Erzsébet.  He was the youngest of the six children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Mihály, József and Rozália.
