Mihály's father was József Körtvélyesi and his mother was Katalin Tóth.  His paternal grandparents were Bálint Körtvélyesi and Anna Halász. He had a brother and a sister, named József and Rozália.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had four half-brothers and two half-sisters, named József, József, János, József, Katalin and Erzsébet.
