Walter was born in 1840 in Sale, Cheshire, UK.1   Walter's father is James MARSLAND and his mother was Charlotte HULME.  His paternal grandfather is Edward MARSLAND; his maternal grandparents are James HULME and Mary (UNKNOWN). He had seven brothers and six sisters, named John, George, James, Thomas, Edward, Joseph, Alfred, Charlotte, Ellen, Elizabeth, Emma, Martha and Ann.  He was the oldest of the fourteen children.  He died at the age of 37 in 1877.1
