José María was born on November 9th, 1783 in Cumana.  José María's father was Vicente De Sucre y García de Urbaneja and his mother was María Manuela De Alcalá y Sánchez.  His paternal grandparents are Antonio De Sucre and Josefa Margarita García de Urbaneja y Sanchez; his maternal grandfather was Pedro De Alcalá y Rendón and his maternal grandmother is Juana Geronima Sanchez Vallenilla. He had five brothers and three sisters, named José Jerónimo, Vicente, Pedro, Antonio José, Francisco, María Josefa, María Agua Santa and María Magdalena.  He was the oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother named Juan Manuel.  He died at the age of 71 on August 15th, 1855 in Cumana.
