María Josefa was born in 1765 in Cumana. María Josefa's father was Pedro De Alcalá y Rendón and her mother is Juana Geronima Sanchez Vallenilla. Her paternal grandfather was Diego Antonio De Alcalá y Guevara and her paternal grandmother is Isabel Maria De Rendón Sarmiento y Sanchez; her maternal grandfather was Dionisio Sanchez Ramirez de Arellano and her maternal grandmother is Ines Maria De Vallenilla y Bocanegra.
