José Miguel was born in 1763 in Cumana.  José Miguel's father was Pedro De Alcalá y Rendón and his mother is Juana Geronima Sanchez Vallenilla.  His paternal grandfather was Diego Antonio De Alcalá y Guevara and his paternal grandmother is Isabel Maria De Rendón Sarmiento y Sanchez; his maternal grandfather was Dionisio Sanchez Ramirez de Arellano and his maternal grandmother is Ines Maria De Vallenilla y Bocanegra. He had a brother and four sisters, named Pedro, Ginesa, Rafaela, María Josefa and María Manuela.  He is the fourth oldest of the six children.
