Jospeh was born in 1850 in Aldfield, Ripon, Yorkshire, England.1   Jospeh's father was William Newis and his mother was Ursula Kitson.  His paternal grandfather was James Newis.  He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, James, William Francis, Elizabeth, Elizabeth and Margaret A.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
