Roland was born in 1902 in Queensland.  Roland's father was Charles Beevor Steele and his mother was Mary Frances Tymons.  His paternal grandparents were John Thomas Charles Thompson Steele and Emma Marietta Daveney; his maternal grandparents were James Blood Tymons and Bessie Marie Power. He had six brothers and a sister, named Edward, Frederick, Charles, William, Owen, Eric and Phyllis.
