Diego was born in 1534. Diego's father was Jorge Portugal, de and his mother is Isabella de Colon Toledo, de. His paternal grandparents were Alvaro Portugal-Braganca, de and Filippa Melo-Villena e Menezes, de. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Alvaro I., Jorge, Antonio, Luiz, Maria, Filippa and Isabella. He died at the age of 36 in 1570.
