Joao was born in 1435. Joao's father was Fernando I. Braganca, de and his mother was Joana Castro, de. His paternal grandparents were Affonso I. Braganca, de and Brites Pereira; his maternal grandfather is Joao Castro, de. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Fernando II. "the African", Alvaro, Affonso I., Antonio, Isabella, Brites, Catarina and Guiomar. He died at the age of 49 in 1484 in Sevilla. He was buried in Sevilla.
