Halfdan Hvide's father was Harald I. "Haarfanger" Yngling and his mother is Asa Hakonsdotter.  His paternal grandfather was Halfdan "the Black" Yngling and his paternal grandmother is Ragnhild Ringerike, ov; his maternal grandfather was Hakon Grjotgardsson. He had three brothers named Guttorm, Halfdan "the Black" and Sigröd. He had sixteen half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Rörek, Siggtrygg, Frode, Thorgils, Björn, Ragnar Rykkil, Olaf, Sigurd Hrise, Halfdan, Gudröd Ljome, Ragnvald Rettilbein, Ring, Dag, Gudröd Skirja, Eirik I. "Blodöre", Hakon "the Good", Alof Aarbod, Ingegerd and Ingeborg.  He died in Estonia.
