Martin was born in 1850 in Ballinturly.  Martin's father was Patrick Tracey and his mother was Honoria Gallagher.  His paternal grandparents were Patrick Tracey and Bridget Keane. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Patrick, Andrew, Mary, Brigid, Nell and Kate.  He was the oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 69 in 1919.
