Martin was born in 1883 in Correal.  Martin's father was Bernard Haughey and his mother was Mary Geraghty.  His paternal grandparents were Daniel Haughey and Elizabeth Cronin. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Patrick, John, James, Daniel, Bernard, Annie, Hanoria, Molly and Delia.  He was the sixth oldest of the eleven children.  He died in Castlebar.
