István was born on February 3rd, 1842 in Aranyos and his christening took place there on February 3rd, 1842 conducted by minister Sólyom János.¹   His godfather was Kohányi Mihály and his godmother was Faragó Susánna.  István's father was István Réti and his mother was Zsuzsanna Csáti (Csáthi - Csátszi).  His paternal grandparents were Réti and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were Csáthy and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and a sister, named József, Sámuel, Mihály and Eszter.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
