Robert was born in 1106.  Robert's father was Robert D'Oyly (3rd Baron Hocknorton) and his mother was Edith of Greystoke (Concubine of Henry I).  His paternal grandparents were Nigel  D'Oyly (2nd Baron Hocknorton) and Agnes. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Henry, Gilbert, Alice and Edith.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
