Maud D'Oyly, who in 1213-4[131] was married to Maurice de Gaunt, alias Berkeley, Lord of Were, co. Somerset, pursuant to licence granted by King John to the said Maurice; who in consideration thereof covenanted to serve the King with twenty knights131 well accoutred (such was her expectant wealth as being an only child), and her father gave Gaunt, in frank-marriage with her, the manor of Weston on the Green, co. Oxon.[132] This great baron was surnamed de Gaunt from his mother, on account of her large inheritance, her descent from the Counts of Flanders, and her kinship to the royal family of England; his paternal surname being Berkeley alias Fitzharding, and his arms "Barry of six, or and azure, a bend gules."—But by Maurice de Gaunt, who subsequently joined the rebellious barons, and thereby lost all his estates except Weston, and a manor in Gloucestershire, she had no issue, and died in 1220.. Thereupon her father, Henry D'Oyly, demanded restoration of Weston manor, but Gaunt kept possession of it; and proceeding to litigation, it was, on trial, confirmed to Gaunt, who retained it during his life, and by deed dated at Portsmouth in 1230, a short time before his death, gave the reversion of it to King Henry III., who transferred it to the monks of Oseney, and their title to the estate then became perfect,[133] Maurice de Gaunt married secondly, Margaret de Somerie, but died s.p. in 1230, when his sister Eve was found to be his heir by record.[134]
