Richard was born in 1879 in Bolton.1  Richard's father was Thomas Walker and his mother was Sarah Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Riley. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, James, Martha and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the five known children.
