Mary was born in June 1862 in Bolton. Mary's father was Robert Thornley and her mother was Elizabeth Welsby.  Her maternal grandparents were Walter Welsby and Maria Bolton. She had five sisters named Elizabeth, Emma, Ann, Ada and Maggie.  She was the oldest of the six children.
