Edmund's father was Henry Taylor and his mother was Elizabeth Mather. His maternal grandparents were Edmund Mather and Frances (Fanny) Holt. He had a brother and three sisters, named James, Elizabeth, Alice and Frances. He was the third oldest of the five children.
