Benjamin's father was Allen Sykes and his mother was Mary Ann Blackburn. His maternal grandparents were George Blackburn and Phebe Oldham. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Allen, Alfred, George, Phebe, Mary, Annie and Martha. He was the second oldest of the eight children.
