Jack's father was William Sumner and his mother was Helen Brereton. His maternal grandparents were Samuel Brereton and Ellen Bebbington. He had two brothers and a sister, named William, Alfred and Alice. He had an adopted brother named John. He died at the age of 96 in August 2005 in Cheshire.²
