William was born on April 16th, 1811 in Farnworth and his baptism took place on June 9th, 1811 at St. Saviour (Ringley).1  William's father was Simon Stones and his mother was Mary Hardman.  His paternal grandparents were Daniel Stones and Ann Mather. He had six sisters named Ann, Betty, Mary, Alice, Sarah and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
