Mary's father was Charles Stocks and her mother was Sally (Ann) Tiffany. Her paternal grandparents were William Stocks and Sarah Brook. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, John, Richard, William, Sally, Sarah and Hannah. She was the youngest of the eight children.
