Joseph was born in 1812 in Mirfield and his baptism took place there on September 20th, 1812.1  Joseph's father was Benjamin Stocks and his mother was Ann Peel. He had two brothers named Joshua and Benjamin.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named John, Jonathan and Ann.  He died at the age of 68 in 1880.
