John's father was Noah Schofield and his mother was Mary Lees. He had four brothers and five sisters, named James, Charles, Wright, Joseph, Ann, Julia, Mary, Harriet and Eliza.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 75 on March 20th, 1890 in Saddleworth.²
