Joseph's father was Thomas Pickles and his mother was Mary Walsh.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Walsh and Mary Bear. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Thomas, William, Michael, Sarah, Isabel, Matty and Mary.  He was the oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 61 in January 1837 in Bingley.  He was buried on January 9th, 1837 at All Saints (Bingley).²
