John's father was William Parkinson and his mother was Hannah Buckley. His maternal grandparents were Jonathan Buckley and Mary Webster. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, William, Thomas, Emily, Mary and Sarah. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 3 in March 1874 in Blackburn.²
