John was born in September 1834 in Little Neston and his baptism took place on June 21st, 1835 in Neston.1  John's father was Joseph Oxton and his mother was Rachel Williams.  His maternal grandparents were Samuel Williams and Ann Millington. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Joseph, William, Joseph, George, Thomas, Anne, Alice, Margaret, Mary and Rachel.  He was the sixth oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 70 in September 1904 in the Wirral.2

‌John and Margaret were married.  They had two sons and two daughters, named John, David, Winifred and Sarah.
