Thomas' father was George Openshaw and his mother was Ellen Buckley. His maternal grandparents were Jonathan Buckley and Mary Webster. He had a brother and four sisters, named Fred, Emma, Alice, Mary and Ellen. He was the oldest of the six children. He died in 1873 in Tonge-with-Haulgh.¹
