Thomas was born in 1816 in West Derby and his baptism took place on September 1st, 1816 at St. Peter (Liverpool).1   Thomas' father was Robert Mercer and his mother was Hanna Swift. He had a brother named Charles.  He was the younger of the two children.  He died at the age of 67 in 1883 in West Derby.
