Elisa's father was William Francis McDowell and her mother was Jane Mary Westby. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Westby and Sarah Mather. She had five brothers named Alexander, Walter, William, John and Charles. She was the fourth oldest of the six known children. She had a half-sister named Eliza. She died at the age of 7 in April 1875 in Bolton.¹
