William was born in June 1853 in Walmersley and his baptism took place on June 5th, 1859 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1 2  William's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Ellen Horsefield.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Margaret Robinson; his maternal grandparents were John Horsefield and Betty Booth. He had two brothers named Robert and John.  He was the youngest of the three children. He had a half-sister named Esther.
