Thomas' father was William Mather and his mother was Ann Burchall.  His paternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. He had three brothers and a sister, named James, William, William and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 18 in October 1880 in Bolton.²
