James was born in 1864 in Bolton.1  James' father was William Mather and his mother was Ann Burchall.  His paternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, William, William and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 54 in 1918.
