Thomas' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Catherine Lawton. His paternal grandparents were Joshua Mather and Elizabeth Kay. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named John, Joshua, James, Fred, Mary, Catherine, Margaret, Elizabeth, Emma, Annie and Maud. He was the fifth youngest of the twelve children.
