Thomas was born in 1774 in Turton and his christening took place on December 27th, 1774 at Walmsley Presbyterian conducted by minister John Aspinal.1 2  Thomas' father was Peter Mather and his mother was Ellen Howarth.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Cranwhaw; his maternal grandparents were George Howarth and Ellen Greenhalgh. He had six brothers and two sisters, named William, Richard, Thomas, James, Peter, John, Ellen and Margaret.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine known children.  He died as an infant about 1775 in Turton.
