Thomas was born in June 1848 in Kirkstall.1  Thomas' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Martha Challinor.  His paternal grandparents were Matthias Mather and Mary Priestley. He had a brother and two sisters, named Matthias, Helen and Mary.  He was the youngest of the four children. He had three half-brothers named Thomas, Thomas and Henry.
