Thomas' father was Robert Mather and his mother was Peggy Duerden.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Esther Mason. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Robert, Edmund, Richard, Esther and Margaret.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven known children.  He died at the age of 29 in February 1825 in Withnell.  He was buried on February 25th, 1825 in Leyland.²
