Sarah was born in September 1860 in Ashton-under-Lyne. Sarah's father was James Chadwick Mather and her mother was Sarah Dickinson.  Her paternal grandparents were James Chadwick Mather and Sarah Charlton. She had three brothers and five sisters, named James, Francis, Chadwick, Elizabeth, Amelia, Amy, Rose and Blanche.  She was the third oldest of the nine children.
