Sarah's father was William Mather and her mother was Martha Mitchell. Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Sarah Makin. She had a brother and a sister, named James and Helen. She was the oldest of the three known children. She died at the age of 33 in December 1845 in Bolton. Her burial was on December 28th, 1845 at St. Peter's (Bolton).²

- This is not the Sarah Mather nee Bayley who lost a husband William in 1833. Probably daughter of William and Martha of G.B., born Nov 1812
  
  Sarah Mather married James Cottom, a mechanic on 11 Jan 1837, just 16 days before their daughter Martha was baptised - That was close !
  
  Sarah was living in the Union Buildings, E Bolton with James's parents Thomas and Martha (assumed) and family in 1841, aged 25 and with daughter Martha (4). James was missing and died in August.
