Samuel was born on October 20th, 1867 in Birkenhead.1  Samuel's father was John Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Heald.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Mary Leigh. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Richard, Edward, Henry, John, Mary, Maria, Elizabeth, Sarah and Ruth.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
